How to Weight Train for Specific Sports

Sunday, May 3rd, 2009

Professional athletes like Andre Agassi are looking at weight training in a different way. More and more often they turn to fitness experts to customize their weight training techniques.

For tennis, lighter weights with an increased amount of repetitions allow increased speed, agility, and strength without losing flexibility.

But baseball players who have to run short distances very quickly use heavy weights and a relatively low number of repetitions. Golfers on the other hand use medium weights to increase the power of their drive and quicken muscle movements. Very few athletes approach super heavy weights. Leave the super-heavy weights and fewer reps for achieving huge bulk to professional weight trainers.

If you have any questions about training for your sport, contact us or read about our high school athletics program.

And always remember, fifteen to twenty minutes of stretching following weight training is a must.

As little as twelve minutes of daily physical activity differentiates healthy kids from overweight children according to a Swedish study of 8-11 year olds. During the summer as well as during the school year, it is important to make sure your kids stay healthy.

Encourage your kids go to outside, play ball, or swim. Doing this with neighbors makes the time especially fun and rewarding. Join them to play frisbee or at the swing set to make their health benefit your fitness.
